Over the past decade, the venture capital landscape has changed dramatically. Average paths to liquidity have lengthened, fundraising has grown increasingly challenging, and emerging sectors have changed what kinds of companies are attracting venture capital. Spencer Stuart and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) conducted in-depth interviews with VC firm leaders across a variety of sectors and surveyed more than 200 NVCA members to learn more about the implications of this transformed environment on the characteristics, skill set and experience required of VC-backed CEOs. In addition to identifying several emerging trends, this new study also reveals best practices that can help venture capital firms become more scientific in selecting and managing the innovative, entrepreneurial board directors and management teams who can profitably guide the industry into the future.
