UK Directors’ Forum

The Spencer Stuart Directors’ Forum is a unique programme which uses role play to provide the opportunity for directors to develop their boardroom skills by working alongside highly experienced leading figures from some of the UK’s top PLC boards.

Overview

The Spencer Stuart Directors’ Forum is a unique programme which uses role play to provide the opportunity for directors to develop their boardroom skills and understand board processes by sharing best practice and working alongside highly experienced leading figures from some of the UK’s top PLC boards.

The Directors’ Forum programme revolves around a mythical FTSE100 plc called MegaMicro. Over the course of two days, we stage a number of MegaMicro Board and Board Committee meetings.

The Directors’ Forum faculty consists of the Chairman, Chief Executive, Finance Director, Chief Legal Officer, the Chairman of the Audit Committee and the Chairman of the Remuneration Committee. These roles are played by leading business people who hold these positions in FTSE100 companies.

At each MegaMicro Board and Board Committee meeting, a small group of the participants join the faculty at the boardroom table to play the roles of Non-Executive Directors, and the remaining participants observe the meeting. After each meeting everyone participates in a plenary discussion.

Participants typically fall into one of the following categories:

  • Experienced executive PLC directors who are seeking non-executive director positions or who simply want to broaden their knowledge of PLC boardrooms
  • Recently appointed PLC directors, both executive and non-executive
  • Directors of subsidiary boards of major companies seeking to gain a better understanding of the issues dealt with by a PLC board prior to their appointment to the main board
  • Senior figures from a variety of backgrounds, for example the public sector, wishing to join a PLC board.

McKinsey, Citi, JP Morgan Cazenove, KPMG, Linklaters, Brunswick and Deloitte have assisted in developing the programme and are the key advisors to the Directors’ Forum. Initially launched in the UK in 1995, it is run on an annual basis.

Each year, in addition to the advisors, the Directors' Forum has been fortunate to work with faculty members from leading FTSE 100 companies, who role play key positions and provide their unique insights.
