John leads the Board Services and CEO practices as well as the firm’s Succession Planning services in Australia and Asia Pacific.
He joined Spencer Stuart in 1993 and has performed various leadership roles within the firm. He led the Australian operations for 15 years and the Asia Pacific region for three years, served on the global board of directors for five years and co-led the global Board Services Practice for three years.
John has extensive knowledge of the Asia Pacific, Australian and New Zealand corporate scenes through his involvement as both a commercial executive and management consultant. Prior to becoming an executive search consultant in 1990, John was managing partner, Pacific region, with Hay Management Consultants (human resources and remuneration consultants) from 1985 to 1990, and managing director of Hay's New Zealand operations from 1982 to 1985. He was also a member of the Hay Group international management board.
Previously, John held commercial and marketing management positions with Tasman Pulp and Paper Company Ltd in New Zealand and Coca‑Cola Amatil Ltd in Australia. He also served on the Secretariat to the New Zealand Monetary and Economic Council.
John is a nonexecutive director on the board of the Australian Rugby Union and a former member of the board of The King’s School Foundation.
He obtained a master of commerce (hons) degree from Canterbury University, Christchurch.
